Cellular and molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration


Binukumar is interested in understanding mechanisms of neurodegeneration to develop strategies to delay or prevent the death of neurons in degenerating brain and spinal cord, particularly in Parkinson's disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease. Deregulation of protein kinase activity has been implicated in various diseases, ranging from vascular disorders, inflammatory diseases and neurological disorders. This has generated intense interest in the pursuit of protein kinases as drug targets.

Our current research focuses on the following directions:

  • Cross talk between differentially regulated protein kinases in type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Alzheimer's disease.
  • Decoding Parkinson’s disease and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis pathogenesis: Deregulated protein kinases as a therapeutic target.
  • Unfolded protein responses in Alzheimer's disease and type 2 diabetes disease models.
  • Neuron–glia crosstalk in health and disease

This laboratory is taking a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the molecular, cellular, and behavioral aspects of neurodegenerative disorders and type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
