At IGIB, we share our excitement for science and our recent discoveries through various events spread over the whole academic year. We host half-day visits for groups of 30-40 college students who visit our facilities to get to know the infrastructural facilities at IGIB and interact informally with scientists and research scholars. More elaborate day-long exhibitions, called Open Day, attract about 800 school students. NGOs which work with children who may not be enrolled in regular schools have also been regularly attending the Open Day. Besides this, we also organize customized visits for groups of high-school students throughout the year. Many members of the IGIB faculty work with individual schools and colleges to streamline science curricula, co-curricular activities and projects.
The CSIR-IGIB Open day
On the CSIR Open Day, IGIB at its two campuses in Mall Road, North Delhi and Mathura Road, South Delhi invites any member of the public to visit its laboratories. Special hands-on workshops and scientific activities are organized for school children and teachers.
The students, in groups of 20-25, accompanied by Ph.D scholars, go on a guided tour of the facilities at IGIB. They also watch science related movies and engage with Ph.D scholars in discussions. A dedicated space of 1500sq ft. is converted into an exhibition area with stalls designed around specific themes. The stalls incorporate simple concepts drawn from the school curriculum, built up further to inform the audience of how that concept is used in research at IGIB.
CSIR-IGIB has hosted several colleges from as far as Pune, Guwahati and Jammu to well –established colleges from Delhi NCR. The groups of students accompanied by the teachers typically visit infrastructural facilities, interact with Ph.D scholars at IGIB and listen to talks given especially for them by IGIB faculty, to inform, motivate and inspire. The IGIB faculties have been taking turns to give these talks that are tailor made for the visiting group.
